Favorite Mediums
As an artist, Marcy Ann Villafaña is deeply drawn to a variety of mediums, each of which allows her to explore different dimensions of creativity. Her process is defined by a preference for tactile materials and the ability to layer, blend, and refine with intricate detail. Below are some of her favorite mediums:
Paper is at the heart of many of Marcy’s works. She often uses a paper-on-paper style, which involves layering different types of paper, creating texture, and building up depth. This technique allows for a dynamic interaction between the materials, with the resulting pieces reflecting an organic quality and visual complexity. The paper’s natural texture, grain, and translucence are celebrated as part of the artwork, giving each piece a unique life.
Marcy enjoys the versatility of charcoal and conte for their bold, expressive qualities. Whether sketching or creating detailed figurative studies, charcoal’s rich blacks and velvety texture allow her to capture the subtle play of light and shadow, while conte offers a softer, more refined look. These mediums are especially prominent in her Just Skin and Bones collection, where they enable her to explore anatomical studies and human form with striking contrast and precision.
Marcy’s approach to painting is an intuitive and immersive process. Through mixed-media techniques, she combines acrylics, inks, and other materials to create vivid, layered compositions that communicate emotion and movement. Whether focusing on the fluidity of ocean life in her MarSea collection or the strength and beauty of women in Radian Beauty Captivates, her paintings evoke depth and energy through color and form. Each piece reflects her unique ability to weave together the physical and emotional elements of her subjects.
One of Marcy’s most cherished artistic practices is the creation of mandalas. These intricate, circular designs symbolize unity, wholeness, and balance. Through the meditative process of painting mandalas, she is able to express a deep connection to harmony and spiritual alignment. The repetitive nature of the designs allows Marcy to explore symmetry and color, creating artworks that are both calming and powerful. These mandalas are a reflection of her inner journey and serve as a celebration of the interconnectedness of all things.
These mediums represent just a few of the tools Marcy uses to bring her vision to life, each contributing to the multi-dimensional nature of her artwork.
